Retirement residences (independent living) in the GTA typically run from roughly $3,500 to $6,000 per month depending on the neighbourhood, suite size, and what's included. That usually covers rent, meals, housekeeping, and activities — but read carefully, because 'usually' is doing a lot of work in that sentence.
Assisted living — where daily help with medication, bathing, or dressing is added — commonly lands between $5,000 and $8,500+ per month. The base rent is only part of the story: care is often priced in packages or by the hour, and this is where budgets quietly break.
Long-term care (LTC) is different: it's government-subsidized in Ontario, with resident co-payments set by the province (roughly $2,000–$3,000 per month depending on room type). The trade-off is waitlists, which can be months or years for popular homes.
Three questions cut through most of the fog: What is the all-in monthly cost for my parent's actual care needs, in writing? What has the annual increase been for the past three years? And what happens — financially and physically — if care needs go up?
