MovingMoving to a Retirement Residence? One Thing to Check Before the Move
Before you book the truck, ask the residence about its moving rules. Hometown Moving Pros on five questions that save time, money and stress.

Moving into a retirement residence can be an exciting new chapter. It may mean less home maintenance, more opportunities to socialize, and having helpful services close by.
But for seniors and their families, the moving process can also bring unexpected challenges.
At Hometown Moving Pros, we know that careful planning can make a big difference, especially when moving into a retirement residence, condominium, or apartment building.
One of the most useful things families can do before moving day is surprisingly simple: ask about the building’s moving rules before booking the moving truck.
It might not sound important, but overlooking this one detail can lead to delays, extra costs, and unnecessary stress.
Why building rules matter. Unlike moving into a traditional house, moving into a retirement residence often involves shared entrances, elevators, narrow hallways, and designated loading areas.
Many buildings have specific rules about when moving companies can arrive, which entrances they can use, and how long elevators can be reserved. Some buildings also require advance notice or paperwork from the moving company.
Imagine arriving with a truck full of furniture only to discover that the service elevator isn’t available until the following day. That’s a situation nobody wants, especially when helping an older family member settle into a new home.
Five questions worth asking. Before confirming your moving date, contact the retirement residence or building manager and ask:
1. Do we need to reserve an elevator? Some buildings require elevator reservations several days or weeks in advance. Ask how much time is allowed for the move.
2. Are there restrictions on moving hours? Certain residences only permit moves during specific hours to avoid disturbing other residents.
3. Where can the moving truck park? Find out whether there’s a designated loading area and whether large moving trucks can access it.
4. Are there restrictions on furniture size? Measure doorways, elevators, and hallways before moving large items such as couches, dressers, and beds.
5. Does the building require any paperwork? Some properties request proof of insurance or other documents before allowing professional movers onto the premises.
Getting these answers early helps everyone prepare.
Why this can save you money. Professional moving services are often charged by the hour. If a moving crew arrives and must wait for an elevator, parking access, or building approval, those delays may increase the total moving time.
For example, an unexpected one hour delay could mean an additional hour of moving charges, depending on the company’s billing terms. By arranging access ahead of time, families can help keep the move organized and avoid preventable expenses. It’s a small amount of preparation that can make a real financial difference.
Make moving day comfortable for your loved one. While the movers handle the furniture and boxes, consider arranging for a family member to spend time with the senior in a quiet, comfortable area. Moving day can be noisy and busy, especially in shared buildings.
Having someone available to answer questions, provide reassurance, and help with personal belongings can make the experience more comfortable. Keep medications, important documents, glasses, and other essential items with the senior or a trusted family member rather than packing them on the truck.
We’re here to help make moving easier. At Hometown Moving Pros, we provide professional residential moving and packing services throughout Durham Region, including Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Bowmanville, and surrounding communities.
We understand that moving into a retirement residence is about more than transporting belongings. It’s about helping someone begin a new chapter with dignity, comfort, and peace of mind.
Our advice? Before booking your move, make one phone call to the building manager. It could save hours of frustration on moving day.
