Metatax is an accounting firm on Nashdene Road in Scarborough, eight years in, built around personal tax returns rather than corporate work. In their own words, most of what they do for an older client is not clever tax work. It is sitting with someone, going through the slips in order, and answering the same question a second time as patiently as the first.

You can meet them by video, by phone, or at the office, whichever suits. Slips can be posted, dropped off, photographed on a phone or uploaded, and with your say so they can pull most of them straight from the CRA. A son or daughter is welcome on any call, which matters when the person handling a parent paperwork lives somewhere else.

The CASL member rate is a flat $50 plus HST for a senior personal return and $75 plus HST for a couple. That covers the complete return and the credits that actually apply to older people: the age amount, pension splitting, medical expenses, the disability tax credit where it applies and the Ontario senior benefits. E-filing and copies of the return and the Notice of Assessment are included, and there is no extra charge for a small rental or for a spouse final return. Consultations are free at any time of year, which is the point, because a question about a CPP letter arrives in July rather than in April.
