Where to start

  • Help at home or long-term care: Ontario Health atHome, 1-833-515-1234, arranges publicly funded home care and every long-term care application. Read home care in Ontario.
  • Toronto Seniors Helpline: 416-217-2077, one number for community supports, care at home and crisis services.
  • Government benefits: our free Benefits Finder shows which federal, Ontario and Toronto programs are worth checking.

Getting around

Seniors 65 and over pay the TTC senior fare, and once you’ve paid for 47 TTC trips in a calendar month on the same PRESTO card, the rest of the month is free. Wheel-Trans, the TTC’s door-to-door service, is based on how a disability affects travel on regular transit, not on age. GO Transit is 55% off from 65.

More: transportation for seniors, including the free accessible parking permit and renewing a licence at 80.

Programs and activities

The City of Toronto runs registered recreation programs, such as fitness classes, swimming and arts, in community centres across the city, and adults 60 and over get 50% off the fee for adult programs. Read the City’s page. For free and low cost programs across Toronto, see free programs for seniors in Toronto.

Help with money

The City of Toronto’s Property Tax, Water and Solid Waste Relief Programs help low income senior homeowners: you must be over 65, or 60 to 64 and receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement, with household income under the City’s limit, and there is a yearly deadline. Read the City’s page. Ontario’s Senior Homeowners’ Property Tax Grant is claimed on your tax return; our benefits checklist explains it.
